 Introducing Tom Moran . . .

. . . the new CARES Travel Coordinator. Tom hails from New York State, from Warsaw in Wyoming County. Tom traded the snow belt for the sun belt in May 2009. His arrival was earlier than planned; he was going to retire this September but circumstances came into play. On a visit to Mom in Seminole in March 2009, he went to the graves of his father and grandparents near Sunshine Lake Estate on Congress. While there, he looked at mobile homes with a view to retiring in the following year. He couldn’t believe it when he was shown the place that had belonged to his grandparents. Tom bought the home, headed back to NY, put his house in Warsaw on the market and sold it within 5 hours. After closing on the house so soon and auctioning the contents, Tom and his wife were out of a home so he accelerated his retirement (Tom worked for the railroad for 30 years). They arrived back in Florida in May 2009. And that is how he came to return to his roots and live in New Port Richey, as much a surprise to himself as to his four children and the grandchildren. Tom and Cindy set to work settling into Grandma’s old home, making it their own, and within a short time, Tom was working at CARES Elfers Center as a volunteer bus driver. Now, a year later, he has taken over from Norm as Coordinator.

Tom also left another world behind in Warsaw, that of politician. He was active in local politics for 14 years, becoming town supervisor, then Chairman of the County Board of Commissioners. During this time he collected enough anecdotes to fill a book. On the urging of a couple of colleagues he did just that, wrote a book. It took a year to compile the history and funny stories of his political career. He found a publisher on the Internet and took two trips, to New York and Albany, to sell it. The measure of the book’s success was that they broke even! “Call the Roll” came out in 2001.

Now Tom embarks on another career as CARES Travel Coordinator. We welcome him to Elfers and wish him great success in his new life in our corner of the world. Glad to have you with us, Tom!
