CARES Volunteer Luncheon

In honor of Older Americans Month, CARES hosted a luncheon for all of the agency’s volunteers on Wednesday, May 26th at the CARES Rao Musunuru, M.D. Enrichment Center in Hudson.

E. Douglas Beach, Ph.D., Secretary, Florida Department of Elder Affairs, was the guest speaker at the event. State Representative Thomas Anderson, who serves on the CARES Board of Directors, attended the luncheon as did State Representative John Legg who briefly addressed the volunteers. Other attendees included volunteer members of the CARES Board of Directors: Phillip Wood, Board Secretary; Theresa Brock, Dr. David Johnson; and Leigh Massengill.  Honorary Board Member Dr. Marc Yacht, also attended.

Secretary Beach and Representative Anderson presented awards to long term volunteers Adrienne Buck (31 years), Lillian Wellin (30 years) and Madelaine Woodman (18 years). Also, recognized was the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club whose members staff the CARES volunteer Telephone Reassurance Program in Land O’ Lakes making telephone calls to designated individuals to monitor their safety and to provide support.   The club has been making charitable contributions to CARES to help fund senior services for 21 years.

CARES volunteers and other older Americans are a core component of service delivery to seniors delivering food to the homebound, providing transportation when needed, helping with home repair, shopping and much more. Older Americans month was established to honor these older Americans and to recognize their contributions.

Members of CARES management staff served lunch, catered by the CARES “We Care” café, to the 152 volunteers who attended the event. After lunch, entertainment was provided by the “Old Time Radio Show” players who presented a skit mimicking an old style radio show.

CARES sincerely appreciates its volunteers who are committed to CARES vision of “A Caring Community Committed to Strengthening Lives and Creating Positive Futures”.
